Sparrow Hill Farm

We, Josiah and Nettie and our little farmers Edmund, Aaron, Marco, and Lucia, are the stewards of Sparrow Hill Farm. Sparrow Hill Farm is just outside Monroe WI, and is comprised of a motley collection of different pieces of land where Nettie and I raise our 100% grass-fed lamb and our world class pastured pork. We also work jointly with nearby like-minded fellow farmers in raising our beef and poultry (see more below). Our farming methods are unconventional but our mission is simple, "Embrace Life".

The Hertzler Family

This means we put the soil and the environment first in our farming practices by avoiding industry standard subtherapeutic antibiotics, synthetic worming medicines, and continuous overgrazing of the land. These conventional farming methods kill soil life and structure leading to erosion, destruction of fertility, and the release of excess carbon into the atmosphere.

The land we steward is often degraded or not useful for industrial farming anymore. We are working hard to bring life back into the soil and environment with careful regenerative management of our livestock. We rotationally graze our cattle, sheep, and pigs. When we put the soil health and environment first, it leads to happy, healthy animals and a superior product both in flavor and nutrition on your plate.

We know as a conscious consumer who is tired of the industrial food machine, you may have more questions as well as insight into how we can do better. If you do have any questions about any of the process of how our meat gets to your plate, insight into how we can do it better, or want to come visit for yourself please reach out support@sparrowhillfarm.net. Nettie or I will answer you. The boys would rather just type emojis. 😀

Because we are limited in our access to land and we want the regenerative movement to go beyond what Nettie and I are capable of managing ourselves, we do work with a couple local trusted farmer partners. These partners are listed below and follow everything and more that I described above in land stewardship.

Please read the protocols that we and our partner farmers adhere to by clicking this link. Our Farm's Protocols

Seven Seeds Farm

Our primary partner in raising Sparrow Hill Farm's 100% grass-fed beef.

We have worked on various levels with Michael Dolan from Seven Seeds farm for years. He is doing amazing work transforming a farm into beautiful regenerative savannah with the use of grazing animals in Spring Green WI.

We work closely with this farm to custom raise our Sparrow Hill Farm labeled beef. They go above and beyond the regenerative and clean protocols that we follow.

Wanda Farms

A partner in raising Sparrow Hill Farm's pastured poultry.

Joe and Hannah Wanda of Wanda farm's custom raise our beautiful, juicy, pastured poultry. They get moved daily through green pastures and fresh air. They raise our birds just south of us in Harvard IL.

Rolling Hills Devons

A partner in raising our 100% grass-fed beef.

Although our primary partner in beef is Seven Seeds farm, we do have Jamie Hostetler of Rolling Hills Devons southwest of us in Bellevue IA raise some beef for us as well. He has been regenerating land while producing the finest quality grass-fed beef along the Mississippi river for years.

Bering Bounty

Captain Mark from Bering BountyWe love the benefits and nutrition eating quality seafood gives to our diet, but had some trouble raising salmon and cod in the pastures with our sheep, pigs and cattle :). So, we're doing the next best thing and working with Captain Mark from Bering Bounty of Alaska.

Mark's business is actually based out of Madison WI. While he spends most of the year with his boats fishing in Alaska, Mark calls Wisconsin his home (proof in the sweatshirt). He uses sustainable and ethical techniques to harvest some of the highest quality fish you'll find. The fish is then quick frozen and vacuum packed on the shore and sent by freighter to Seattle. Mark then uses a WI-based trucking company to bring it the last leg of the journey here to the Midwest.

It's as close as we can get to the experience of buying straight off the coast.

Bryant Family Farms

Bryant Family Farms is a pastured poultry producer from Mineral point. We have have heritage turkeys currently that were raised by them.

Joe's Farm

We sourced a temporary batch of chicken early this year from Joe's Farm in MI. The Poultry is processed just across the border in Ohio and then sent to our farm here in Monroe WI. While the product is fantastic and the ethics and protocols of Joe's farm are topnotch, we still prefer to source from closer to home. Early Summer 2025 we should have our first batch of poultry ready from our local Sparrow Hill Farm collaboration.
