How we protect the sheep against predators

Meet Shadow. Our beautiful and faithful sheep guardian dog. She is highly energetic and loves chore time because it often means a fresh bone!

What type of dog breed is Shadow?

Shadow is a breed of dog originating in Bulgaria known as the Karakachan. They were bred by nomadic shepherds to stick with the flock and not wander off. Over the years this has resulted in dogs that are fiercely loyal to the animals in their care. They don't bother anyone unless a predator would try to remove a sheep from the flock.

How does a dog protect the sheep from predators?

The dog will let the intruder know, on no uncertain terms, that they are not welcome. If they don't leave, this could result in the employment of their strong jaws. Typically, the dogs never have to resort to an actual fight. Their warning barks are usually well understood.

What makes Shadow and her breed perfect for the farm?

True to her genetics, Shadow loves to be with the sheep. She sticks with them as they move pasture to pasture. She much prefers the open pasture to being inside in limited space. She is very protective of the sheep (except I think she is far too friendly to people to be of much use against human predators ðŸ¤£). Due to her long history with livestock, being with the animals is her happy place. And with her heavy coat and adapted genetics, she absolutely loves the cold and snow.

Is there any other benefit to using a guard dog?

Since we use a guard dog for predator protection rather than trying to hunt or exterminate predators, our farm runs a lot smoother with the surrounding nature. Coyotes, fox, and even the occasional bear can move through and be unbothered as they go about their day hunting rabbits and other game. Shadow lets them know that they can have whatever they want, but the sheep are off limits!

As always, eat well and stay healthy!

Why you should pay more for meat

It is common to hear complaints of rising grocery prices. People are concerned. They worry and feel out of control. Out of control of rising prices. Fearful of what is in the food when they do buy it. Terrified that they may lose access all together. There is a reason for this and it did not happen overnight. Consumer's fears are valid. But there is a fix. It is on our hands. We need to take back control.

Sharing the Farm with Wildlife

The pastures where we raise our livestock are not only home to our animals. They are frequented by the local wildlife population. Deer, turkey, foxes, and rabbits are among the many varieties that call our farm home. But it's not just because they live there that they frequent our pastures. Read on to learn how we actually design the way we farm to welcome the existence of a healthy, local, wildlife population.
