Regenerative meat and food production: a trend or a way of life?

posted on

January 5, 2023

According to Kim Severson of The NY Times, "regenivore" is the new word for 2023. She writes "A new generation wants food from companies that are actively healing the planet through carbon-reducing agriculture, more rigorous animal welfare policies and equitable treatment of the people who grow and process food."

I like this. I hope it stays as more than a trend. For many of you reading this, eating consciously for the planet and our health is not something new. And you know, for our farm, this is more than a trend. It's a way of life.

The benefit of trends

By definition, trends have a way of coming and then going just as quick. But the good thing about a trend is a whole new crowd can be exposed to something very good. That's certainly the case with regenerative meat and food production.

The challenge with government and corporate initiatives

When it comes to the environment, government and corporate climate initiatives are cloudy and ill-defined at best. They are often skewed by money and political pressures rather than an honest look at what makes sense and works.

When actions are taken, they frequently are a marketing gimmick and nothing else. I am not discounting the positive actions that have been taken by large organizations to improve our food and climate. It's just that you, as a consumer, can feel very distant from the change you are hoping to see. You do not feel in control of how your money is spent.

The benefit of buying directly from a farmer

This is where buying directly from a farmer starts to really make sense. You can find a local farmer to partner with who is healing the earth with their regenerative farming practices. Buying direct keeps honesty and integrity at the forefront. If you are lucky, you will also find a farmer who makes your journey to sustainable eating very convenient with online ordering and shipments directly to your door.

What is attractive to many is the opportunity to have a tangible impact for good through the support of farms that champion the environment. The bonus is they also get to enjoy far healthier food while they are at it.

Maybe, for you, these ideas are new. You are just buying into this trend. There is absolutely nothing wrong with that. Welcome! Give it a shot. Your taste buds will thank you and the environment will benefit.

When you buy directly from a farmer using regenerative farming practices, your purchase directly supports the farm. A farm that is raising better tasting and more nutritious food while healing the land.

Why you should pay more for meat

It is common to hear complaints of rising grocery prices. People are concerned. They worry and feel out of control. Out of control of rising prices. Fearful of what is in the food when they do buy it. Terrified that they may lose access all together. There is a reason for this and it did not happen overnight. Consumer's fears are valid. But there is a fix. It is on our hands. We need to take back control.

Sharing the Farm with Wildlife

The pastures where we raise our livestock are not only home to our animals. They are frequented by the local wildlife population. Deer, turkey, foxes, and rabbits are among the many varieties that call our farm home. But it's not just because they live there that they frequent our pastures. Read on to learn how we actually design the way we farm to welcome the existence of a healthy, local, wildlife population.
