Bone Broth
Something about going into my 30s and realizing that aches and pains come a lot easier than they used to, has had me researching bone broth. So, I recently started making bone broth. WAY easier than I thought it would be. Here is a little twist on a recipe shared with us by a friend. It will make a rich and delicious broth that is loaded with collagen and minerals. Keep it in the fridge for a quick base for soups, or to just drink as is.

Ingredients

  • (2) Large carrots
  • (2 stalks) Celery
  • (1) Onion
  • (a few) Peppercorns
  • (1/4 cup) Wine, red or white depending on preference
  • (2 sprigs) Thyme
  • (2 sprigs) Rosemary
  • (a few) Bay leaves
  • Other herbs to taste if you want
  • (3-4 lbs) A chicken, beef bones, or pork bones depending on taste

Directions

  1. Thaw out whatever you are planning to use for bones. My last batch, I used a few chicken feet, one smallish bare beef bone and a pack of pork neck bones. About 4 lbs total of bones. You can make it easy on yourself and just use 1 whole chicken.
  2. Next, add all the ingredients into either a crockpot or an insta-pot. Cover with water.
  3. For the insta-pot which is what I used, you will set it to broth or soup, low pressure for 3.5 hours. For the crock pot, set on medium and cook for 15 hours or so until the bones have softened up and are trying to fall apart.
  4. Scoop the bigger pieces out of the broth, strain through a cheese cloth or some other thin cloth or filter and put in jars in the fridge. When you come back and check on this after it is cooled, it will have gelled up into a semi-liquid collagen jelly. It's amazing!
  5. Just try it!
